Scheme D: Two successive discounts of 3% and 39%

Effective price = $(1 - 0.03) \cdot (1 - 0.39) = 0.97 \cdot 0.61 \approx 0.5917$

Customer pays 59.17% → discount = 40.83%

Step 4: Compare

• A → 39.25% discount

• B → 46.15% discount

• C → 50% discount

• D → 40.83% discount

The smallest discount is 39.25% (Scheme A).
