In November 2025, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) released its World Heritage Outlook 2025 report — a global review of the conservation status of natural World Heritage Sites. Out of over 270 natural and mixed heritage sites evaluated worldwide, Khangchendzonga National Park in Sikkim, India was rated as “Good” — indicating that the site’s ecological condition and management are in a favourable state with relatively low current threats. This made it the only Indian site in the report to achieve this top rating.

• The IUCN World Heritage Outlook report classifies sites into four conservation outlook categories: Good, Good with Some Concerns, Significant Concern, and Critical based on threats, protection measures, and management effectiveness.

• Other major Indian natural sites like Great Himalayan National Park Conservation Area, Nanda Devi and Valley of Flowers National Parks, and Sundarbans National Park were rated lower — most in “Good with Some Concerns” or “Significant Concern”.

• Khangchendzonga National Park is also unique because in 2016 it became India’s first UNESCO Mixed World Heritage Site — recognised for both its natural and cultural significance.
